Sample Weekly Schedule – Counseling Practicum and Internship (Master’s Level)

Below is an approximation of a “typical” training week for both the Practicum and Internship levels of Training at the Master’s Level.  Schedules may vary depending on the Trainee’s progress and specific needs, and may vary week to week.   Schedules will be established at the beginning of each semester.  Trainee’s schedules will be influenced by space availability, Trainee’s academic course, and Trainee’s personal commitments.  Trainee’s schedule may be modified depending on the time of the year, completion of activities or seminars, and with respect to any specialized focus, and any systemic changes in the Center.

Practicum in Counseling

Trainees will typically need 100 over the course of their practicum to meet the hours requirements for their individual programs of study.  Most programs require that 40 of these hours be direct service and 10 of these 40 be group counseling hours.  Over the course of the semester, Practicum students in our agency will generally work 10-20 hours a week.  This will more than meet the hours required by your program and will prepare trainees to advance into their Internship experience.

Notes

  • More hours are spent in observing initially, and these hours are replaced by increasing individual counseling appointments as training progresses.
  • We expect all trainees to take a lunch break when appropriate (when full or most of day is worked).  Self-care is essential for a positive and successful training experience.  Also, trainees are not able to see students after the Center is closed, unless the supervisor has agreed to remain and be available.  This does not include educational outreach presentations which may be scheduled after-hours.

Internship in Counseling

Trainees will typically need 600 over the course of their internship to meet the hours requirements for their individual programs of study. Most programs require that 240 of these hours be direct service and at least 1 hour a week of individual supervision be provided. If done in one semester, Interns typically  in our agency will generally work 30 – 40 hours a week. (Students seeking to do their internships over the course of more than one semester need to consult with their graduate program for permission and consult with the Training Director for feasibility.) This will more than meet the hours required by your program and will prepare trainees to enter into the helping profession.
