Individual Counseling
What is Individual Counseling?
Individual counseling provides an opportunity to talk with an objective, caring professional about your concerns or problems in a brief, solution-focused manner. Brief counseling can help you learn ways to feel more empowered and overcome challenges. Concerns discussed range widely but might include difficulties with adjustment, feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, academic concerns, substance use, issues with friends and family, or relationship concerns.
How to Connect with Individual Counseling
At the end of your initial access/triage appointment, the clinician you met with might recommend and help set you up to begin individual counseling sessions. If you decide to participate in short-term, individual counseling, you will be matched with a clinician at the Counseling Center based on experience, area of concern and availability. Once you begin, you and your clinician will work together to develop treatment goals and arrange your counseling session schedule.
Students who desire or would benefit from specialized or longer term care may be provided with case management services and referred to providers in the community.

Does the Counseling Center Offer Relationship Counseling or Couples Counseling?
Sometimes, the focus of concern that brings students to the Counseling Center is a relationship issue. When both partners are enrolled NC State students and motivated to address this, couples can explore the option for couples counseling. The Counseling Center can provide brief, time-limited couples therapy for issues that might reasonably be resolved in a short-term, solution-focused model. As appropriate, referrals to community resources for couples counseling can also be made by Center clinicians.
